Archaeological Field School 1994

Archaeological surveys at Birchtown have been on-going since 1992. Archaeologist Laird Niven directed the first survey, which identified 20 features dated from the late 18th century and nearly 300 artifacts were recovered.

An Archaeological field school was conducted in 1994 by Dr. Stephen Davis of St. Mary's University which unearthed several other artifacts, celler depressions and very complex stone wall features.

Perhaps the most unusual discovery made in 1995 were the stone features refered to as " The Mysterious Mounds". A partial excavation of a single mound proved inconclusive as to it's function and purpose. They remain an enigma at present.

The 1999 project included mapping new and previous excavations with the use of GPS (global postioning system) and GIS (geograpic information system) technologies, assisted by Niven's In-Situ Cultural Heritage Research colleague, Heather MacLeod-Leslie.

Several of the artifacts are on display at the Black Loyalist Heritage Museum in Birchtown.
